Dr. Sara Bruins

Education Specialist Consultant

Sara Bruins is a veteran educator who is currently serving as the high school principal at Valley Catholic High School in Portland, Oregon. She recently spent a year sabbatical in Cabarete, working with the Mariposa DR Foundation. Her involvement began nine years ago, bringing high school service groups during the summer. Over 150 high school girls from the United States have traveled with Sara and have been introduced to Mariposa and the community of Cabarete. 

The Mariposa DR Foundation has always held a special place in her heart, since the first time she stepped foot on the property in 2013.  Her initial visit came the summer after her mother passed away and she immediately wanted to be involved to keep her mother’s love of service alive. Little did Sara know, the Mariposa DR Foundation has become a home away from home for her and her two daughters.

Sara holds a PhD in Education and a Master’s Degree in Special Education, with experience in both the public and private school sector. Her belief that all students have the right and ability to learn propels her work with marginalized communities. She has vast experience educating students who learn differently or who have to overcome barriers in order to access their education. She welcomes the challenge of working with hard-to-reach students and sharing the love and privilege of receiving an education.
